In the land of fitness, not all Barre classes are created equal.
Truth: Ideally, Barre Classes should come with a buyer beware sticker. You are paying good money for that hour.
Reality: They don't. Facilities and Instructors can teach whatever they like, qualified or not. And NO one regulates it. NO ONE is monitoring the studios and gyms that have popped up all over, offering classes, and calling them "Barre."
How do you spot the real from the fake?
Do your homework.
1. Before signing up for a Barre Class, look into the studio/gym and what Barre program it teaches. Yes, a program is crucial. It ensures that the studio/gym has a throrough background and understanding of the movments they are teaching and REAL TRAINING. A program also helps guarantee a consistency from one Barre class to another, as all the instructors are on the same page.
2. Most importantly, check out the instructors that are teaching the Barre Classes, look at their bios and see what certifications they hold. Make sure they are not only qualified, but BARRE CERTIFIED. When a Barre instructor is certified it means a safer class for you. The instructor knows what they are doing, how to cue movement, what movements are safe for the body, and how to sequence these movements---so,in addition, they are also effective to get you results. You can take comfort in the fact that when knowing your barre instructor is actually barre certified, you wont be getting a made up class with a bunch of "stuff" and You Tube's latest "barre" moves. Yes, anyone can TAKE a Barre Class, but not everyone can TEACH a Barre Class.
Barre has the potential to cause serious injury or serious injury over time when a barre class is taught by an instructor who isn't qualified to teach it. Things like spinal alignment, and OVER PULSING through the same joint matters. If you sign up for a barre class, and the instructor has you pulsing for minutes on end, know that over time you WILL develop an injury as a result and its more than likely the instructor is probably using that pulse time to "think"of what to do next ( sequencing of movements matter, its a science).
